Description
Yellow lily pad 2018-’20, oil on canvas, 22” diameter, signed and dated on the bottom edge.
As an object, the painting is a shallow (3/4 inch/ 2 cm.) drum. The canvas is stretched across a ring made of plywood and secured on the back with staples. The image wraps around the edges, so there is no need for a frame. The painting hangs from a single eyelet on the back near the top, so it is always perfectly balanced.
My ambition for this subject was to use only colour and form to make the lily pad appear to float. It is actually very difficult to do, and I made many studies before the finished work. I am currently making another painting of the same scale and composition, but incorporating a reflection on the right side of the image to emphasize the surface of the water.
